Bertrand is today the name of the oldest bookstore in the world and the largest Portuguese bookstore chain, with more than 50 stores distributed throughout mainland Portugal and the islands, in addition to an online bookstore at www.bertrand.pt, which offers the largest catalog of books in Portugal. Founded in 1732 by Pedro Faure, of French origin, the first Bertrand bookstore opened its doors on Rua Direita do Loreto, in Chiado, and has remained since the second half of the 18th century at number 73-75 Rua Garrett, where it moved due to the Great Earthquake of 1755. In 2011, the Guinness World Records recognized the Bertrand Bookstore in Chiado as the oldest. One of the oldest bookstores in operation. Each bookstore is designed with its target audience in mind, taking its location into account. Embracing the vocation of being a meeting place and a space for culture, all stores have their own personality, promoting different activities – readings, autograph sessions, gatherings, exhibitions, launches, among others.
